Lesson 7: Protecting yourself and your partner: STIs and HIV

Introduction

In the previous lesson you learned about preventing unintended pregnancies and different methods of family planning. It was emphasized that both girls AND boys have the responsibility to use a form of contraception to prevent an unintended pregnancy.

In this lesson you will learn about safe sex and how to protect yourself and your partner(s) from STIs including HIV. The ABCDEF+ method is used to explain the different methods you can choose to prevent both STI infections and HIV and pregnancy.

Through the game ‘What is safe and what isn’t’ you explore which sexual acts are safe and which aren’t, so you can make an informed decision. It is explained how to use a (male or female) condom correctly so you know how to protect yourself and your partner from STIs including HIV once you choose to become sexually active.

Finally, you will get tips about how to talk about sex and how to negotiate your own boundaries and wishes with a partner in the future. This is even more important when you know how easily STIs and HIV spread within sexual networks. Sticking to your boundaries and wishes will help you to stay safe and protect your partner as well.
