1. Knowledge

Signs & symptoms of HIV

Students can:

  1. Explain about being HIV positive, the HIV test, the window period, PEP treatment, the difference between HIV and AIDS and how the virus damages the immune system;
  2. List two infections or diseases that people with AIDS often get.

Transmission and risk behaviours

Students can:

  1. List the four body fluids which can contain HIV.
  2. List the three main ways in which HIV can enter a person's body and correct myths about HIV transmission.
  3. List four high-risk behaviours for HIV transmission and two low-risk sexual practices.
  4. Explain how STIs and rape increase the risk of HIV transmission.

Treatment

Students can:

  1. Explain the difference between cure and treatment and be aware that there is no cure for HIV
  2. Explain that it can take any time between several months up to more than 15 years for someone with HIV to develop the first AIDS symptoms, during which time the person can infect others.
  3. Explain that ARVs are not a cure but only prevent an HIV-positive person progressing AIDS and that in order to slow down the process of developing AIDS an HIV-positive person should lead a healthy lifestyle.
  4. Explain that PMPTC reduces the chance of mother-to-child HIV infection;

HIV testing

Students can:

  1. Explain that taking a blood test is the only way to find out whether someone is infected with HIV.
  2. Explain how HIV testing takes place, that HIV testing is anonymous and describe where students can get HIV testing and counselling.

Stigma & support

Students can:

  1. List two consequences for people living with HIV e.g. discrimination, not being treated well or being stigmatised and list two things students can do for people living with HIV;
  2. Describe where and how to find information, support, advice and services related to HIV prevention, testing, care and treatment.
