By the end of this session, students should be able to know this.
Puberty & emotional changes during puberty:
Students can:
- Explain why adolescence can be a confusing time and that this is a natural part of growing up.
- Explain that emotional ups and downs are also part of growing up
- List four different emotions.
- Explain that love is an emotion, and can give joy,but also heartache.
Personality and self-esteem:
Students can:
- List three qualities to describe themselves and three values that are important for them.
- Explain that everyone is unique, and that people differ in their personalities and qualities.
- Explain the concepts of self-esteem and self- awareness and why these are important to work at.
- Explain that keeping up confidentiality and having respect for self and others are the best conditions for self-development.
Autonomy & support:
Students can:
- Explain the right to one's decisions and self-expression.
- Explain that all young people experience challenges and uncertainties during adolescence in their search for their own identity and autonomy.
- Explain that in adolescence, young people become more independent from their parents, get more responsibilities as they grow older and that experimentation and disagreement with boundaries set by parents, is all part of that.
- List 3 things for which an adolescent is likely to gain more responsibility during adolescence.
- Mention one person they would share concerns with regarding emotional and relational changes.
- Explain that when sad or insecure (for instance, because of heartache), they can ask for support.
